Over 100 schools have signed up for DMU’s world record attempt!
This year’s Global Handwashing Day, which takes place on 15th October, is described as “a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.”
Teaching kids how to wash their hands properly is, without doubt, one of the most important lessons that they can ever learn. A major effort to engage UK youngsters in this hand washing awareness programme is being lead by a seemingly unlikely alliance between De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester and the famous Guinness World Records™.
Over a hundred schools across the nation have already signed up to the “national effort to improve hand hygiene among children”, according to DMU’s recent article.
Referred to as a “Germ Busting Washathon” the objective of the initiative is to set an official world record for the largest hand hygiene lesson across multiple venues.

The article quotes a Microbiologist at DMU: Professor Katie Laird was reportedly delighted at the response from schools, teachers and children across the UK, whilst confirming the importance of teaching effective hand hygiene.
“Teaching children, the importance of hand hygiene can have lasting benefits for their health and their communities.”
