…and why you must wash effectively
Education, peer pressure, constant reminders – it’s vitally important to encourage everyone to wash their hands with soap and water when they’ve been to the toilet, according to a recent report on the Huffington Post website.
The article, by Anna Medaris Miller, refers to a 2003 study of 3,749 people Hand washing practices in a college town environment which revealed that “proper hand washing practices, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are not being practiced.”
Ms Miller writes that in the survey, 10 percent of visitors to the bathroom didn’t wash their hands at all, 33 percent didn’t even use soap, and most of the others didn’t wash effectively by taking at least 20 seconds as recommended by the CDC – see Show Me the Science – How to Wash Your Hands.
Washing with soap and water is the best form of effective hand hygiene says the article, quoting Boston dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch.
“Washing your hands is better, but [hand sanitizer is] often the only option, and better than nothing.”
