Higher temperatures may allow pathogens to flourish
A warning has been issued by the European Cleaning Journal (EJC) that football fans should wash their hands frequently during the forthcoming World Cup.
The article has revealed that the European Centre for Disease Protection and Control (ECDC) will be monitoring potential infection risks throughout the tournament.
Watching for infection outbreaks and foodborne illnesses
Any mass gathering presents its own series of infection risks, but the ECDC will also be on the lookout for foodborne illnesses which are “expected in some areas, particularly in warmer parts of the country where high temperatures may allow pathogens to flourish.”
“Fans are being advised to wash their hands at frequent intervals and drink plenty of boiled or bottled water to help reduce their risk of falling ill.”
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency aimed at strengthening Europe’s defences against infectious diseases. It is located in Solna, Sweden.
