Food Safety Week highlights the importance of hygiene to caterers
More and more people are heading outdoors as the summer takes hold – in many cases to enjoy food supplied by a number of rapidly increasing pop-ups at street food events across the UK. Is is however “essential” to maintain a strong focus on food safety, including effective hand washing techniques, according to a recent report on the New Food Magazine website.
The article by George Hand, Sales Manager for Cleaning; Hygiene and Catering at Office Depot states that “there is no better time to for owners of pop-up restaurants and stalls to consider how a meticulous approach to cleaning and the right cleaning products can help them to keep customers healthy and happy”.
This is because his reminder coincides with Food Safety Week which has as its focus “the work of FSA staff and thousands of others across the food supply chain working behind-the-scenes to ensure that food is safe and what it says it is.”
Mr Hand quite rightly points out that this will help street food vendors avoid reputational damage and help encourage repeat business.
Lack of hand hygiene is a threat
Hand hygiene is “particularly crucial” around the catering and hospitality sector says the article.
“While the process of washing hands before and after handling food is second nature to most, many people do not realise that hands must be washed for at least 20 seconds to kill germs.”
Relevant policies and procedures can help ensure that high standards are consistently maintained – helping mobile caterers to ensure that this season they do not become another “flash in the pan”.
