Council advised in advance of the need for appropriate washing facilities
The first ever weekly artisan market in Kirkcaldy High Street was deemed a great success, with the exception of problems caused by the lack of hand washing facilities provided by street food traders, according to a recent report on the Fife Today website.
The event was initiated by local businesswoman Louise Canny as a first step to begin the revitalisation of the town centre, wrote Debbie Clarke.
Advice for those providing food during the event had been reported as coming from Fife Council’s environmental health department and their requirement that adequate washing provision would be made by relevant traders. Some, it was claimed, had to pack up and leave because of a lack of relevant facilities, though the authorities maintain that they concentrated more on help with relevant guidance.
Although no formal action was taken against those who came up short, advice was offered to traders, according to Fife Council service manager for Environmental Health (Food & Workplace safety) Lisa McCann.
“Our standard advice was issued to the market operator in advance of the event. This includes, for establishments handling food, to ensure there are facilities for hand washing.”
“This must consist of hot and cold or appropriately mixed running water and a supply of soap and paper towels” McCann is reported as saying.

Why hand washing facilities are vital to any street food business
If you are thinking of venturing out with a street food business, there are five reasons why you need a hand wash unit according to NCASS – the Nationwide Caterers’ Association.
“A separate hand washing facility must be provided. It must have hot and cold (or appropriately mixed running water). Alcohol gels are not acceptable on their own but can be used in addition to a hand washing system.”
