Soap and water for at least 20 seconds advocated
World Food Safety Day takes place this year on 7 June 2022, intending to “draw attention and mobilize action to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks and improve human health.”
#WorldFoodSafetyDay
The joint initiative between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) has the awareness-raising purpose of raising awareness around the world of the consequences of food and water contamination, according to a recent report on the Times Now website.
The article sets out to achieve this with a short quiz about safe food handling. Top of the list is, not surprisingly, the vital role that effective hand hygiene plays in keeping illness at bay. It quotes the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as saying
“FDA recommends that you wash your hands with warm water and soap for no less than 20 seconds before and after handling food, and after interacting with pets or using the bathroom.”
How to wash your hands properly
The NHS in its article How to wash your hands, which also includes an informative instructional video, states that
“Washing your hands is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and others from illnesses such as food poisoning and flu.”
This is particularly important “before eating or handling food” and “before and after handling raw foods like meat and vegetables” says the guidance.
