Basins should be designated for hand washing only says beauty sector leader
The Schwarzkopf Salon Health & Safety Guidelines has a stated aim of providing “a set of recommendations to raise hair salon standards” which feature best practice guidance for staff hygiene, keeping equipment and the premises clean and general workplace safety.
Part 2 of the guidance document deals specifically with hygiene standards.
The section begins with vitally important advice regarding hand hygiene, which reveals three key takeaways:-
- “Hands must be washed with soap and water when soiled”.
- Alcohol based gels should only be when sanitising clean hands.
- A salon should ideally have a hand washing basin or basins that are designated for hand washing only.
The downloadable PDF document then proceeds to list when hand hygiene activities should take place – and there are some instances that may surprise salon staff. The usual situations will come as no surprise, such as washing hands after going to the toilet, blowing your nose, handling dirty laundry and after coming into contact with bodily fluids including blood.
Perhaps washing hands after smoking may come as a surprise – but one more stated instance shouldn’t – and it really is important!
“Hand hygiene should be performed… before and after contact with each client”.
Good hand washing techniques are vital
The download reveals all the key stages of an effective soap and water hand wash. It includes a 12 stage process diagram sourced from the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Washing your hands with liquid soap and running water loosens, dilutes and flushes off dirt and germs. It is the combination of running water, rubbing your hands and the detergent in the soap that helps loosen the dirt, remove the germs and rinse them off your skin.”
